A new party in the political landscape of the Cypress Hills-Grasslands area was in Swift Current over the weekend, connecting with constituents and the issues they care about.

The People's Party of Canada is a newly formed political party, created by former Conservative Party of Canada member, Maxime Bernier, and is looking for support for the party across Canada, with members of his party hosting meetups across the country to get people acquainted with his party's values and beliefs.

A meetup for the electoral district of Cypress Hills-Grasslands took place in Swift Current on Saturday.

Stephen Feltmate, a local coordinator for the Peoples Party of Canada, was at the event and said that the People's Party of Canada was a true conservative party.

"I think one of the major issues that we have in Canada right now, is there are two very left-wing parties, so there's the Liberal party, the NDP, and the Green party, and our feeling is that they have actually caused the Conservative party to move left on a lot of issues."

Feltmate also said that because the party is so new, he has not had very many opportunities to interact with people face-to-face like he did at the meetup held on Saturday.

"There's not a lot of local interaction right now, most of the interaction I've had with people that are supporters have been actually online in social media groups, it's been a very interesting experience."

While the People's Party of Canada is in competition with David Anderson, Cypress Hills-Grasslands Member of Parliament, Feltmate said they wish to present another option for voters.

"This is not about David Anderson, he's a good man, would support him 100 per cent if he was the People's Party of Canada's representative, this is about allowing people who support our ideas and maybe aren't happy with the current direction of the Conservative party to have an opportunity to vote for the ideas that they actually believe in, and not feel like they have to go to the ballot box and compromise."

Feltmate expressed his belief that politics should be about ideas, not people.

"Let's face it, my vote and your vote are not going to swing the election, but I can go home, and I can sleep at night if I mark the ballot the way that I actually feel, and if I'm voting for something that I really believe in, then as far as I'm concerned I've done my duty as a citizen and I would be happy with my choice."

Feltmate added that he doesn't think that he does not think that the party will win the next election.

A candidate for the People's Party of Canada Cypress Hills-Grasslands area has not been selected, and Feltmate said at this point, they are just trying to connect those who share the parties ideology.
