Animal protection officers are getting more power to do their job in Saskatchewan.

The province has released amendments to the Animal Protection Act that will redefine what's considered animal distress, add new locations that officers can inspect such as boarding kennels, and will also put an onus on veterinarians to report suspected animal abuse by owners.

The proposed amendments will also give officers the ability to issue corrective action orders.

Last year, the Animal Legal Defense Fund rated Saskatchewan’s animal welfare laws 11th out of the 13 provinces and territories in terms of their effectiveness.
