Before Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebrations kicked off, hockey legends took a trip out of their way to visit some of their Swift Current fans yesterday.

Taking with them their spoils of victory, former NHLers Lanny McDonald, Bryan Trottier, Wendel Clark, Marty McSorley, and Colin Patterson were at Riverview Estates for a meet and greet.

Also making appearances were the Stanley Cup, the Memorial Cup, and even multiple Stanley Cup rings.

Trottier made a point of sharing his Stanley Cup rings with an elderly gentleman.

When asked about being able to share that with the man, Trottier said it was in the nature of hockey to share the experience.

"We all know that as hockey fans, it’s a shared experience, it’s one thing to go play the game, but when you can share the fun of that with family and friends and community, everybody gets excited about it, so to bring the Stanley Cup rings back and share that with the folks around here, they get a big kick out of it, as we all do."

Growing up in the southwest Saskatchewan area, Trottier said that he thought Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada would showcase the region’s features.

"I'm so proud of Swift Current, I think they really have a nice glow," said the Stanley Cup-winning player and coach. "I think it's really looking good on the little city as far as their hospitality and showing off some of the wonderful spirits that they have here. Great, great little hockey town."

Issuing much of the same sentiment, Clark said that the events he’s attended so far have been enjoyable.

"The people have been great, everybody had a lot of fun with it, they've done a great job organizing and coordinating all the events, so everything is going very smoothly, and it's fun. Like I said, the hockey clinics with the kids have been great, and the school visits have been very good and we're just here at the home now visiting all the true hockey fans."

Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada festivities continue today at Sheldon Kennedy Rink and at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
