A second cannabis retail store has filed an application with the City of Swift Current seeking a development permit.

Westleaf Retail Inc. and 102014474 Sasaktchewan Inc. are looking to call 220 Central Avenue North home and after city council meeting Monday night, the City is considering it.

General Manager of Planning and Growth Development with the City of Swift Current, Michael Ruus said he can't predict what decision council will make, but he did say if the store is approved, it would be welcome news.

"From our perspective looking at downtown, we want to see vacant spaces filled," he said following council. "I think that's a positive that we have a new business that is wanting to invest in the community and move forward to help employ people and grow the community."

Kevin Tindall's application will now have to go through the three-step system council implemented in the fall of 2018 before its approved.

The three steps are to have property owners within 75 metres of any proposed cannabis shop notified, including an advertisement in the Southwest Booster of the City's consideration.

The second step is a public hearing to be held to consider the development, which Ruus believes will be at the February 11 city council meeting.

And the last step is for city council to make its decision.

While Tindall's application forges on, so does the City's first cannabis retail store. Its been open for just over two weeks and while going through the City's three-step process got some negative feedback from nearby business owners, but that appears to have changed recently.

"I don't believe we've received any concerns or complaints with the operation of the existing retail cannabis outlet," Ruus said. "At the end of the day it's a retail use, there is no consumption occurring on site. As part of that prior analysis of that application, the nuisance aspect, based on all the professional literature we could find, appeared to be negligible, quite similar to a pharmacy or many other retail operations."
