The Swift Current Fire Department continues to receive recognition for saving a dog two weeks ago.

This time the department is being honoured by animal rights organization PETA with a Compassionate Fire Department Award.

Denis Pilon, Swift Current Fire Chief, said he wasn't too surprised by PETA's recognition.

"They have a special interest in protecting animals, so they recognize what we did was selfless and was for the protection of the animal," he said. "From our perspective, we're not supporting PETA, what we do is if we see an animal in distress we will do what we can to save that animal."

Several news agencies across the country picked up the video as well as a few internationally. Pilon said it was a shock to see how viral the video went.

"We thought that it might be picked up by some news channels in Saskatoon or Regina and be shown around the province," he said. "Our purpose in posing the video was to get the message across that 'the ice is not safe so please stay off of it.' We never ever expected it to do what it is done."

Pilon also noted they've received positive feedback from not only the community but worldwide as well.

The department also saved a deer from the same creek in February 2016.
