In the wake of two southwest-Saskatchewan men sustaining injuries due to a wildfire south of Tompkins, one of their close friends is raising money to help out.

Ron Wedrick and his son Evan Wedrick were battling one of the many blazes on Tuesday evening when both suffered serious injuries and have since been sent to a Calgary hospital after brief stops in Maple Creek and Medicine Hat.

The day after the pair were hurt, Kalie Migneault set up a GoFundMe account to try and help the Wedrick families with the financial side of things.

Migneault said both men are very well known, liked, and respected among the community so the roughly $75,000 raised in 48 hours is a testament to that.

"It hasn't slowed down," she said. "Which that part kind of surprised me, even today how much every half hour it's still growing at the speed that it is is amazing. It caught me off guard but it's obviously going towards an amazing and well-needed purpose."

Currently, Migneault isn't sure of their status at the hospital but did say she heard yesterday that Ron is communicating by writing and is conscious, with Evan still in critical condition.

"It's kind of bittersweet (to help them) because I can't really help in any other way," she explained. "I know when things like this happen everyone thinks what can I do? Of course, you pray and you think about them non-stop. I guess yes I made the page but I didn't really do anything after that, so I don't feel like I have helped them as much as I could."

Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary is treating 25-year-old Evan and 43-year-old Ron for smoke inhalation and severe burns.
