It's just about spring cleaning time for the roadways in Swift Current.

First up will be the residential street sweeping program that is expected to start at the beginning of May depending on the weather.

Following that City crews will commence their line painting program, something that Mitch Minken the general manager of infrastructure and operations with the City of Swift Current said is a fairly lengthy process.

"Start with the school zones and then move to downtown and then do the rest of it," he explained. "We hope for kind of an end of July or early August finish, where we have them all painted."

Each year roughly 45 kilometres of centre line, 300 crosswalks and 500 parking tees get painted by the City costing about $25,000 to $30,000.

"It's all water-based latex paint, so it just doesn't adhere and last as long as some of the oil-based paints used in the past," Minken said. "The most economical way to go at it is just to continue to paint as the other options - the paint is very expensive."

Upon finishing off all the painting, City crews circle back to the school zones at the end of summer to redo them in time for school.
