The October long weekend is finally here, and highways will be busy with many travellers off to spend Thanksgiving weekend with their families.

Tyler McMurchy, Media Relations Manager with SGI, mentioned his take on driving safe for the weekend.

"We advise people to keep safe driving habits in mind; we know that the roads are going to be extra busy when you're out travelling home to see family for the Thanksgiving long weekend," he said. "We want to make sure everyone gets there safely with basic traffic safety behaviour, which ensures that you're driving sober, and driving appropriately for the road conditions."

McMurphy added to avoid accidents and remain safe, those travelling must pay close attention to weather warnings or any construction that may be happening on the route to their destination.

In October, snow can fall at any moment, making roads slippery and dangerous. Drivers must also be well rested and not impaired by alcohol, prescription medication, or illegal drugs.

It is important for drivers not to distract themselves with any electronic devices. If a cell phone is needed for navigation or if the driver would like to adjust music with their phone, they can get help from the passenger or other family members in the vehicle.

If you are driving anywhere on the October long weekend, make sure you slow down, drive safe and obey the rules of the road so that you and everyone else can get to their destination safely and enjoy their Thanksgiving holiday.
