Today is National Cupcake Day, with bake sales happening at businesses all over the City of Swift Current to help support the Swift Current SPCA.

The Canadian coordinated event by local shelters, SPCAs, and Humane Societies was created to raise critically-needed funds for animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted.

This will be the fourth year the Swift Current SPCA has participated in the nationwide event. Due to the SPCA Shelter being closed on Monday's this will mark the first time the community-funded organization will hold it's National Cupcake Day event at the SPCA Bookstore.

"It just gives us another opportunity and a little bit of a different crowd of people that come into visit us regularly down there," Teresa Cole Development Officer with the Swift Current SPCA said. "We haven't done it at the bookstore before so we're hoping this will catch on for us. We will have cupcakes and a bit of a book sale on today."

With the Swift Current SPCA being the only public animal shelter in the southwest corner of the province, the community-directed shelter receives a lot of support from southwest area residents.

"We really appreciate it (the support we receive)," Cole told Swift Current Online. "We're really happy to say that it's not just businesses in the city (that support this event), we've usually had folks outside of Swift Current helping and this year we've got a group in Shaunavon that are holding their sale at Cooper Plumbing and Heating for us. So it really is a regional initiative too."

For your chance to buy a cupcake and help support the Swift Current SPCA visit their bookstore today between the hours of 9:30-11:30 a.m. or from 1-5 p.m.

Other businesses that will be selling cupcakes to help support the Swift Current SPCA are W.W. Smith Insurance, New Family Chiropractic Clinic, Canadian Mental Health Association and Pet Valu.
