Three people were killed in a head-on collision last night five kilometres east on Tompkins on Highway 1, and an infant was taken to hospital with injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

Swift Current Rural RCMP detachment members received a call around 8:10 p.m. about a vehicle travelling westbound at a high rate of speed, in the eastbound lanes, on the Trans-Canada, and received another call of a head-on collision involving two vehicles while on route.

A 66-year-old male driver from Gull Lake was the lone occupant of the westbound vehicle in the wrong lane, and was deceased.

The other vehicle had three occupants, all from the same family - a 27-year-old female driver and 62-year-old female passenger from Shaunavon were pronounced deceased at the scene, and a male infant in the back seat that witnesses removed from the vehicle.

He was taken to Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current.

Police believe alchohol was a factor, pending toxicology results. The investigation remains ongoing with assistance from the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

The eastbound lanes were closed overnight, with traffic rerouted to the westbound lane early in the morning, according to a 3:30 a.m. RCMP release.
