Police will be out in full force this May long weekend.

The majority of their focus will be cracking down on impaired drivers, with several check stops locations setup for the weekend.

"We're really reminding people that as they head out on the roads, they really need to be careful," said Manager of Media Relations with SGI Tyler McMurchy. "They need to make sure they're driving sober, slowing down and travel at a speed that is appropriate for the road conditions, buckle up of course and put down the phone."

Last year in Saskatchewan alone there was 255 collisions, 2 deaths and 82 injuries due to vehicle collisions on May long weekend. According to SGI approximately half of Saskatchewan's fatal collisions, every year involve someone who was impaired at the wheel.

"People might be out celebrating (this weekend)," McMurchy said Thursday morning. "There is definitely the potential for impaired driving, especially if people aren't aware you shouldn't get behind the wheel of a car."

As of January 1st, the laws around drinking and driving have changed. Experienced drivers with .04 blood alcohol content (BAC) will lose their licence for three days and have their vehicle seized for three days.

SGI is also reminding all drivers 21 and under and anyone in the Graduated Driver Licensing program, there is zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol.

"If they are any drugs or alcohol in their system, they can lose their license for 60 days and have their vehicle seized for a minimum for 3 days," he said. "That's something that people who might be out there celebrating the long weekend need to be aware of. If you're are going to get behind the wheel of a car don't do any drug, make sure you drive sober and plan a safe ride home."

This months SGI spotlight is focusing on impaired driving throughout May.
