Vehicle theft is nothing new, but even with awareness campaigns, and SGI reminding people to not leave their keys inside their vehicle, the numbers are still going up.

"We do hear from police," shared Manager, Auto Fund Communications with SGI, Kelley Brinkworth, "that about half of all vehicles that are stolen had the keys inside. Either left in the ignition, or the key fob was hidden somewhere. You might think its a good hiding spot but chances are a savvy thief is going to find those keys in your vehicle."

SGI stats for 2014-16 show 91 percent of stolen vehicles are recovered, but 51% are deemed a total loss.

The best way to prevent your vehicle from becoming someone else's joy ride...don't make it appealing.

"Don't leave any valuables in the vehicle at all if you can help it, take them into your house.Even just spare change in the cupholder - clear it out so that there is no incentive for a thief as they're walking by and they see that in there".
