Shaunavon is in the running with three other communities for a $250,000 donation to improve their recreational facilities.

Applicants from all around Canada were sifted through, leaving only Shaunavon, Calgary, Belleville, Ont., and Antigonish, N.S. as the top four participants in the Kraft Heinz Project Play program.

The contest grants the money to be used for any recreational facilities in a community, but Shaunavon intends to use the funds to refurbish their high school's football and track field.

Rachelle Dordu, educational assistant at Shaunavon High School, and former assistant manager for the Shaunoven Shadows football team, explained that she signed up the town after seeing the program advertised on television.

"So I just happened to be watching a football game, and they advertised it on TSN, so I pulled it up and saw that we would be eligible, so I thought, well, I'll give it a whirl, so I threw together my video and did up the questionnaires, and this is where we're at."

If Shaunavon wins the program, the money is scheduled to go towards three main projects: bleachers, an insulated change room, and an insulated sound booth.

Dordu said that she knew firsthand how much the town needed the improvements to the football field.

"The projects that I have applied for are something I have been trying to work for a few years now, probably about eight years, six years, it was something that I thought was needed, and I just thought it was a great way to do it, and maybe get all the projects done at once, and see how long it's going to take us."

According to Dordu, minor football, minor soccer, high school and elementary track and field, as well as the high school football team all use the area.

Speaking on why she thought it was essential to ensure that youth have adequate sports facilities, Dordu had this to say.

"Physical activity is huge, it helps the way they think when it comes to school work, and it helps them gain friendship bonds, it's crucial, not only for their physical health, but for their mental health as well, so if we can give them a better place to participate in sports, the better it will be for everybody involved."

The communities progress through the program by getting votes for their community from October 13 to 19, and the team with the most votes will be given the $250,000.

The winner will be announced on October 28 during the halftime of the Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes CFL game.
