Driving to the Swift Current Airport is about to get a lot more smooth and less dusty.

At Tuesday night's council, the City approved to have the road running from Airport Road to the airport and the airports parking lot paved.

The R.M. of Swift Current announced last fall they would pave 6.4 kilometres of Airport Road and the City felt this was a unique opportunity to have the paving work done on the airport grounds.

Mitch Minken, the general manager of infrastructure and operations with the City of Swift Current, said the City inquired on the cost of the work with Delta Aggregates and they were pleased with the quote.

"They provided us with a price that was substantially below our current price in the city paving," he said. "It was an opportunity that we had to work hard to take advantage of."

The $152,375 project excluding GST wasn't budgeted for in the 2018 City's capital budget, but they plan to use re-allocated funds from other projects that don't get finished this year.

"It's not like we actually cancelled projects in order to actually accomplish this one," Minken said. "Some of those projects that we re-allocated funds from will be deferred into 2019. Most of them weren't going to get completed in 2018 for various reasons anyway, so we will just re-budget those in 2019."

The upgraded road and parking lot will be a lot more pleasant for the users of the airport and airport employees according to Minken.

"Obviously not having to travel over that gravel will definitely be a benefit for them," he said. "It's mostly about dust and mud control on the airfield that's the most important benefit of it."

The project is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2018.
