Volunteers and staff members from businesses all over Swift Current came together to Go Green on Friday.

Over 120 people went around the city planting trees, perennials, shrubs, and a lot of other projects on their mission to beautify the city.

Ashley Belon, with marketing at Stark and Marsh, explains what they Go Green Project is.

"On an annual basis, we [Stark & Mark] partner with the City of Swift Current and Innovation Credit Union who has been a partner for the last two years. Together we work with the City and ask them where they need help. The City dictates the project sites for the most part, and we provide the manpower. We just pitch in for whatever the City needs to be done that machines can't do."

Belon explained how an accounting consultation business ended up creating the Go Green Project.

"We just wanted to get involved in the community, so we wondered what we could do to help, where should we start, and what should we do. We ended up asking the City if they could ever use a day where we just provide a bunch of manpower and just help out. The City agreed, and they threw some projects our way that year," Belon said. "It has just evolved into this huge project list and sites, and we are doing a lot harder work at we were doing in the first years of this project."

The Go Green Project was on for the ninth year. In that time they have planted over 2,400 trees and shrubs across Swift Current.

The focus of this year was beautifying places that will be used and visited during the 2019 Summer Games.

At the end of the day, they planted over 70 trees, 145 shrubs, and 500 perennials.

Next year will be the 10-year mark for the Go Green project. Belon adds that they plan on doing some special things that they haven't done before to celebrate the decade-long project.
