The Lyric Theatre is attempting to gain funding through a National Trust for Canada competition.

The "This Place Matters" contest could see up to $60,000 awarded to the Lyric, if the competition is won.

If won, the money will primarily go to renovations in the upstairs floor of the theatre - a place where the Lyric board members hope to host music lessons, accommodate performing artists, and welcome a wide range of art endeavours.

Corla Rokochy, Program Manager at the Lyric Theatre, explains the contest was a great way to speed up the vision for the historic building.

"I think that there's always a vision for what the Lyric can be, but we weren't sure how long it was going to take; this is a great way for us to have some goals and a push to move into the future."

With 25 other locations vying for the grand prize from around the country, Rokochy shares why she feels the Lyric is deserving of votes, donations, and ultimately the top prize.

"I think it's the cultural hub of the southwest, where we have theatre, music, it's always a good time when you come here and it creates great memories. It's exciting to be able to have the community get involved and vote," she said. "I just hope that everybody shares, votes donates through the page, and it goes to getting us upstairs in the Lyric."
