While southwest Saskatchewan's Pride Week doesn't officially begin until July, a part of that tradition was completed on Sunday in the city.

A group of volunteers got together under the sunshine to lay down touch-ups on the city's permanent rainbow crosswalk.

Installed a few years ago, the installation has now been covered with an aggregate solution that should hopefully last a number of years and withstand traffic better than regular annual paint jobs.

In a statement emailed to Swift Current Online, Southwest Saskatchewan Pride said that they were proud of the community support they received from passing motorists.

"The Pride crosswalk means so much to the LGBTQ2S+ community, as it represents inclusivity, diversity and a sense of belonging. So many times we are asked why we need a sidewalk, or a parade or a flag. Well, it's because we have a right to exist just like everyone else. We should be able to love who we love and live our truths, whatever those may be. In order to educate and start those conversations, we need to be visible. Swift Current has come a long way with acceptance and visibility, and we are thankful for that. We also recognize that there is still so much more work to do. And maybe the crosswalk will continue to bring those conversations and give us a chance to express why. LGBTQ2S+ Visibility is absolutely imperative in our community and every community. It shows those who may be feeling alone, that there is a safe place here. There are people to talk to and they will be accepted for who they are."

Southwest Saskatchewan's Pride Week is scheduled for July 10-17, 2021.
