Members of the Swift Current Students Against Drunk Driving group were at the Swift Current Mall on Saturday giving out refreshments and spreading awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.

As Bliss Reiss, vice president of the Swift Current SADD chapter explained, the mocktails were intended to remind drivers to choose a mocktail instead of a cocktail, promoting safe driving practices.

Reiss said that a competition was held at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School to decide which of the imitation cocktails would be served at the mall.

"A couple weeks ago we did a competition at our school, the high school, and we put it on, and people of the community came, and all the clubs in our school, they created mocktails, and we did a competition one day at lunch, the mayor came and judged, a whole bunch of prominent members of the community came and judged."

Reiss said that the Student Leadership Council's drink was selected as the winner.

Getting students, members of community leadership, and mall patrons involved with the event makes the SADD chapter believe they can help put an end to impaired driving.

"That's the whole point of our club, is to create awareness, and to hopefully end drinking and driving."

Hoping to combat impaired driving during the holidays, Reiss commented that more SADD programming would be seen throughout Christmas and into New Year's.

"Drinking and driving is always up when people are home for the holidays, so we're planning check-stops sometime this month, at the end of this month, the beginning of January, and we have a little something special we have coming up we're going to plan with the RCMP."

The Swift Current Rural RCMP say that they have done 50 impaired driving investigations during 2017 and 2018, resulting in 34 charges.
