Tompkins was busy Saturday night during a community fundraiser to cover repairs to their water station.

The repairs were needed after last fall when a major break at the water station left the village needing to cover an approximately $46,000 bill.

Saturday night's community-organized fundraiser was held at the Tompkins Community Hall where local residents and businesses came to show their support.

Bonnie McBurney, one of the event organizers, explains that a community the size of Tompkins can have difficulty generating those funds.

"We're a small village here and a lot of us are seniors - we can't afford to just fork that money out. So a fundraiser was an idea to help cut the cost. It has given us a large portion to cover that bill," she said.

Low event costs have translated to over $22,000 in funds raised for the Village of Tompkins.

McBurney also was pleased at the opportunity the community had to enjoy themselves while, in turn, helping the village pay for the infrastructure cost.

"We were so happy with the support we got - it was a fantastic evening and we had a great turnout! Everyone had fun from the little kids to the older residents. It was so nice to have an evening where the entire family could come out," she said.

The Village of Tompkins is currently awaiting a potential government grant to help cover repair costs as well. However, as Village Clerk Colette Evans mentioned late last week, the grant process is not guaranteed so events such as this have been helpful to the Village and its residents.
