A newly-penned agreement will allow the Swift Current Fire Department to fight structure fires in the village of Stewart Valley and the R.M. of Saskatchewan Landing.

Swift Current City council approved of the mutual-aid agreements Monday evening believing they can provide the service without causing undue strain on the City's fire service.

Kayla Krusky, the administrator of the R.M. of Saskatchewan Landing, said the deal has been in the works since October.

"[The agreement] is for quicker response, with the old mutual-aid agreement our fire chief had to call back and it had to be the fire chief to dispatch Swift Current Fire Department," she said. "Now the way it will be set up is that they will get dispatched along with our fire department, so essentially it's for a quicker response."

According to Krusky, the R.M. of Sask Landing volunteer fire department doesn't have the training of the Swift Current Fire Department, which is one of the reasons they inked the deal.

"They handle a grass fire," she said. "But they aren't trained if somebody was trapped in a house, to deal with it."

The agreement is in place until December 31, 2019, for both R.M.s.
