A cross-country tour fueled by the kindness of Canadians made an overnight pit stop in Swift Current on Tuesday evening.

Ori Nevares and Phil Roberge spent a good portion of Tuesday and Wednesday in the city of approximately 17,000 residents, before continuing their hitchhiking trek eastward in hopes of making as many connections with Canadians as possible.

"I think it's surpassed all of our expectation so far, we thought it was going to be much harder than it has been," Roberge said. "For example in Whitehorse we just put our bags down and didn't even put our thumbs out yet and there was a car waiting there to pick us up and we were like this is going to be way easier than we thought. Over and over again it's surprised us how nice people have been."

Included in the two university graduate's tasks upon this trip is to complete their expedition from Whitehorse, Yukon to St. John's, Nfld. with a maximum budget of a $150.

"The $150 was kind of a fun challenge we threw in there, also related to Canada's 150th anniversary this year and so far that challenge has been going great," said Nevares.

Upon leaving Swift Current Wednesday afternoon the pair had combined to only spend $9 so far on their trip, while travelling over 2,800 kilometres since July 10.

The young men aged 22 (Roberge) and 23 (Nevares) will be documenting the cross-Canada excursion by photographs, video, and also blogging about it on their Facebook page Expedition Canada 150.

"The fact that Phil and I haven't explored Canada is a common trait amongst people across Canada, with the fact it's very big, spread out and isolated," Nevares said. "The main goal of this is actually to spark interest and spark knowledge or new ideas of Canada that maybe people across the country otherwise wouldn't have known."

Amidst the Canada 150 celebrations, the duo feels it would be fitting to spend a night in the heart of the nation's capital.

"We're hoping to be able to camp out in the Prime Minister's yard," Roberge added. "If we could do that it would be an absolute success for us on this journey."

Currently, they are still trying to get in contact with the Trudeau family to try and see their dream come to fruition.

The former University of British Columbia students are hopeful they will reach St. John's by August 10.
