After record-setting weather in July, August's weather has returned to normal.

With the hot and dry weather of July well in the rear view mirror, daytime highs have returned to the seasonal average.

"It's been a big change since we got into August, Swift Current has been quite a bit cooler than July," said John Paul Cragg, warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada. "It's almost like a switch turned right at the beginning of the month, Swift Current started out August with the daytime high only reaching 20.9 degrees (on August 1) and those cooler temperatures have stuck around."

August has also brought more than triple the amount of rainfall totals than July and still counting, already producing 24.4 millimetres of rain with the monthly average of 47.4 millimetres.

Cragg notes for the majority of July, southern Saskatchewan experienced a big ridge of high pressure with southerly winds bringing warm air up from the United States.

"But now the pattern of the atmosphere has switched with southern Saskatchewan experiencing a few low-pressure systems passing across," Cragg said. "With those low-pressure systems more northerly flow of air has been coming in behind, bringing cooler air, cloudier skies, more precipitation and therefore a cooler and wetter month."

The Saskatoon based meteorologist expects the current weather patterns to continue in southwestern Saskatchewan.

"We're looking at temperatures to finish August around average for this time of year," he noted. "The models are also saying that there is a better than average chance that precipitation for the end of August will be lower or slightly lower than average. You combine that together and we will be looking at an August that will be close to average in terms of temperatures and probably just a little bit under average in terms of precipitation."
