In hockey, goalie’s face an extreme amount of pressure.

Last night the Gull Lake Atom hockey team hosted the Eastend Atom squad in the second game in their playoff run. After losing game one in the best of two total point series the 9-year-old Gull

Lake goalie added some more pressure by wanting to have a fund-raiser during the game.

Berney Weston asked his parents if he could do a unique fundraiser for his friend Chayce. Chayce deals with having Autism.

Berney explains his reasons behind his idea

“Chayce is my friend, he has Autism and it makes it hard for him to grow up and I want to make it better for him,” Berney said.

Berney's original idea was to open a lemonade stand at the family farm but his dad felt that traffic would be slow, especially at this time of year. Berney asked about doing something around hockey and the idea was born.

Berney asked for pledges on every stop he made in the game, and he felt people would donate some money.

Clint Weston Berney’s dad explains how the fund raising started.

“It started Thursday about 5:00 PM and we talked about it until about 8:00 pm that night,” Weston said. “We approached Chayce’s mom that night with the idea and she was just ecstatic, we sent out the Facebook post at 10:30 pm

that night and it’s all happened since then.”

The Weston’s were hoping to raise $50 so they could match that and give $100 to The Casey Foundation in Regina. The foundation's goal is to give back to Saskatchewan residents that cope with Autism. Chayce has already seen

benefits from the foundation.

The Weston family is overjoyed with the response from Gull Lake and the surrounding communities. In the spirit of sportsmanship, the parent’s of Eastend passed the hat during the game and made a $100 donation to his cause.

At the end of the game, Berney made 53 saves with each one averaging over $180.00 per save. The total donations were at $9,500 and more are still coming in as of 10:30 PM Monday night.

The home team lost the game but a young man won a friend for life.
