Time and time again the Swift Current Broncos are proving you should never count them out of a hockey game.

Swift Current came back from down 4-2 in the third period to force overtime before losing 5-4 to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night.

“Feel pretty good about getting a point,” said Broncos Associate Coach Ryan Smith. “There's no quit in our team. Playing a pretty good team here. Top in the Central Division there's a reason why. They shoot the puck hard, they skate hard and they play hard. We knew we were going to in for it tonight and I thought our guys responded well.”

The game was the fifth time this season the Broncos have come back to force overtime when trailing by more than a goal in the third period. They've been down by between two and four goals in those games.

“When our backs are against the wall it seems to be when we play our best hockey,” Smith said. “We don't want to always be coming from behind, but to be able to do it time and time again is a credit to our group and that never say die attitude. I think positive attitude and staying with the game plan helps as well.”

Travis Child made 44 saves for the Broncos to help them get the game against Medicine Hat to overtime.

“Our goalie was very good,” Smith said. “He eliminated a lot of those chances by sucking in rebounds and deflecting them to the corner. We defended pretty hard and we limited our turnovers. Yeah we gave up a few shots but we knew that was going to happen they've been outshooting teams all year long. That's fine it's the quality of the shots. We thought first shots were fine it's the second or third we eliminated tonight.”

The Broncos were able to find some offence from different sources against the Tigers. Cole Johnson and Kaden Elder provided some scoring depth before Max Lajoie and Alexi Heponiemi sparked the come from behind effort in the third.

“Anytime you can get scoring from multiple lines it's important,” Smith said. “It takes a little pressure off your power play as well when you've been leaning on it so heavily. It's nice to get that and nice to see us score more than two goals in a game. We had some guys who hadn't scored in a while hit the back of the net which is nice to see.”

Tyler Steenbergen had two assists on the night and was also stopped on two overtime breakaways. Heponiemi then scored in the shootout for Swift Current, but the Tigers got goals from Max Gerlach and Matthew Bradley to earn the extra point.

The Broncos are now 0-4 in shootouts this season.

“It's a skills competition,” Smith said. “Sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don't. You can't overthink that. It's extra points we wish we could have. It doesn't always happen. We'll find a way in a shootout. We can't dwell on that too much.”

Swift Current is now 11-7-2-4. They're 3-3-1-3 since injuries started to take a bite out of their lineup. The Broncos are still missing Glenn Gawdin, Calvin Spencer, Arthur Miller and Riley Stotts.

Swift Current remains is now two points back of the Warriors for second place in the WHL East Division although Moose Jaw has a game in hand. The Broncos face another busy week coming up as they host the Saskatoon Blades on Tuesday, visit Prince Albert on Thursday, travel to Lethbridge on Friday and head to Cranbrook to play the Kootenay Ice on Saturday.
