There’s a growing interest in getting into the Sheep Industry in Saskatchewan.

Gord Schroeder is Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Sheep Development Board and says overall prices in the sheep industry are good, demand is strong and there’s lots of interest in getting into the industry.

“Demand is really good; it is also a family enterprise.  So, if you have a young family, we’re seeing a lot of young couples get into it that have young kids. They don’t worry about the sheep with children being injured or anything else.  It makes for a good family unit/enterprise that they can do.”

He says it’s one of the few options out there that people can get into without a real big capital outlay.

Sheep producers from around the Province are gathering in Humboldt this weekend for the Grasslands Sheep Exhibition.

“Entries are up this year, the trade booths are up this year.  Lots of buzz, lots of inquiries, phones have been busy and so just that real buzz about the industry.  So we’re really looking forward to this weekend.  Now, again we’re putting on a Fiber Showcase and so the wool sectors coming back a little bit.  We’ve got people there spinning and weaving and those type of things.  So, that’s something new we’ve added to the show as well.”

The event also includes some informational seminars as well as the Purebred Sheep and Commercial Ewe Show on Saturday.   Sunday the Junior show starts at 10 with the Annual Sheep Sale scheduled for 1 pm at the Humboldt Uniplex.

The Grasslands Sheep Exhibition is presented by the Saskatchewan Sheep Breeders' Association and the Saskatchewan Sheep Development Board.
