Leafy spurge is one weed that can be a challenge for producers to deal with.

A Weed Webinar focusing on the plant and how to deal with it goes today at 11 a.m.

Ministry of Agriculture Regional Forage Specialist Sarah Sommerfeld says it’s a fairly common weed.

"Leafy spurge is important because it can very aggressively invade range and pasture land, thereby reducing the forage productivity of that land. So then essentially the forage supply is minimized for grazing livestock as well as wildlife."

Sommerfeld notes as part of the webinar they will be discussing options to control of leafy spurge.

"Aside from prevention, multiple control methods can be used - those being herbicide applications. There are biological control, leafy spurge, beetles can be used, as well as targeted grazing with small ruminents, and that is really looking at using sheep and goats to help manage a leafy spurge infestation."

Producers who registered for the webinar will receive a link so they can watch the recorded event again at their own convenience.
