In a meeting held with a little help from teleconferencing technology, Swift Current city council announced a measure of relief for residents of the city that are likely to be affected by the economic impact of COVID-19.

Both Utility and Property Tax clients will see some welcome short-term financial relief and flexibility.

“As a Council, we understand that there is a significant economic impact on individuals and businesses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault. “It is our hope that, by extending this financial relief, we can ease some of the stress that many are feeling and allow people to focus on staying healthy and getting through this situation.”

The first part of the motion will see a three month grace period on the due date on property taxes. The original due date of June 30, 2020, has been extended to September 30, 2020.

The second part of the motion dealt with both commercial and residential utility customers.

Once again, a three month grace period has been granted within which the city will suspend all utility disconnections and late payment charges until September 30, 2020, as well as suspending collection activities.

They add that in light of the new options, any clients that are currently on pre-authorized payment plans with the city have the option to suspend them by calling 306-778-2731 or email customerservice@swiftcurrent.ca
