A local business made it their mission to help those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine, one cake at a time.

Dairy King, owned and operated by Shonnon Klassen, was getting ready to do its annual Easter Cake sale when a thought came to mind for those whose Easter was going to be best had in refugee camps and shelters.

Klassen decided that this year, proceeds from the sale would go toward Ukrainian relief, to help support the innocent people caught up in the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. She decided to donate to Samaritan's Purse, which was already operating in the area when the war began.

"And when the invasion occurred, they just switched their direction that they were moving and they set up a medical unit in Lviv," elaborated Klassen. "They also have refugee camps where they're supplying the refugees with the items that they need and medical supplies."

The money raised was generated purely through Easter cake sales, at $10 apiece. In total, Dairy King managed to raise $1,250.

For Klassen, this war isn't so far away as the other side of the world. For her, it's affecting people in her family at home.

"My future daughter-in-law is actually from Ukraine," shared Klassen. "She's been here for about six years, and she has a sister and a brother-in-law and some nieces and nephews over there. All of a sudden, the whole Ukraine crisis became very personal and it was suddenly family. I just felt like we really needed to step up and do something."

Since the war started, the sister and the children have made it to Canada. Their father who is a dentist has stayed in Kyiv, where he is continuing to help the locals.
