The Village of Abbey’s economic development officer has been recognized provincially for her work supporting rural growth.
Jenn Biensch received the Professional of the Year award from the Saskatchewan Economic Development Alliance. She says the honour came as a surprise.
“Someone had nominated me, and it’s just an incredible honour,” she said. “Saskatchewan has a lot of talented economic development officers, so to be recognized among them all is truly humbling.”
She says the award is given to someone who demonstrates leadership, organization and commitment to their community.
Biensch says much of her work happens behind the scenes.
“A lot of our work happens quietly in the background, building relationships, supporting local businesses, planning projects and helping our community adapt,” she said.
One of Abbey’s major accomplishments has been the redevelopment of the former school into the Abbey Business and Community Centre.
“That is one of the biggest projects our community has undertaken,” Biensch said. “We’ve converted it into a business and community hub that works for what our community’s needs are now.”
Looking ahead, Biensch says housing is a top priority.
“We don’t have a lot of housing options,” she said. “Three Points is working on a regional initiative to start some housing projects so we have family housing available.”
She is also involved in The Hub, a regional tourism and economic development centre north of Maple Creek. She describes it as “a fantastic regional collaboration project that’s innovative and putting us at the forefront of economic development in the province.”
Biensch says the recognition has left her energized.
“I came home from that summit with a renewed sense of excitement and ideas,” she said. “I’m looking forward to what we can do in the future.”
