The first current Swift Current city councillor has announced his intention to seek re-election in this falls municipal election.

First-term councillor Chris Martens announced on Tuesday afternoon on social media he will be on the November 9 ballot in Swift Current.

The father of two has been on council for the last four years and believes his on the job experience is something he can offer to the public if re-elected.

"Understanding the ins and outs of working with budgets and figuring how you do what you do with the city and how you actually get things accomplished," he said. "I feel like I've grown on a continual basis year-after-year and quite frankly I feel like I've just got started and have a lot more to provided to the community."

The 36-year-old from Swift Current has two key issues he wants to continue to offer/progress as a councillor moving forward.

"My whole goal to start with was ensuring what we were doing in the community was open and aware to anyone in the public," he said. "So transparency, that's a big one. Anybody that has talked to me over the last four years or has communicated with me, I've made a goal to respond to them in a quick manner and nothing is hidden.

"Ensuring infrastructure is one of the things we take a focus on. It's not a pretty thing, but it's a necessary thing. To make sure our roads are looked after and that were are making sure we're doing the little things that people may not see to maintain quality of life in the community."

Martens recently started Supplement King Swift Current within the past few years and one of his visions for residents of the city is there should be nothing holding anyone back from reaching their potential or doing something they aspire to do.

"Making Swift Current not just a community to live in, but a community to thrive in," he said Wednesday afternoon. "I think every citizen that is here has an opportunity to grow and thrive just as much as the next person does."

One of his biggest learning experiences with city council came early into his term as a councillor and something he looks back on as a vital process that taught him a lot about his position quickly.

"The very first council meeting that I attended we were essentially presented with a surprise floor renovation that was required for the iPlex," he said. "It was basically a throw yourself right into what city council is by requiring a large quantity of money to be put towards the Innovation Credit Union iPlex floor."

In the 2016 municipal election, one of Martens' strategies was to go door-to-door and meet as many members of the public during his campaign. Although he's not sure he'll get to everyone's house this time around, he still plans to use the same technique to speak with the public.
