Farmers were caught off guard this year for what turned out to be the worst outbreak of anthrax in Saskatchewan’s history.

Tuesday’s numbers showed the death toll reached 651 head of livestock. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says that 138 farms have been affected in 43 rural municipalities.

Dr. Greg Douglas is a veterinarian with the agency and says the anthrax risk will continue in the years ahead.

Douglas says vaccination usually costs a couple of dollars per dose.
