Isaac Poulter stood tall by turning aside all 19 shots he faced, picking up his fourth shutout of the season to lead the Swift Current Broncos (23-30-5-2) to a 2-0 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers (11-43-3-1) Saturday night.

The game had a fast-paced start as the two teams rushed up and down the ice in the opening minutes of play. Isaac Poulter made a few saves in tight to keep the game scoreless until Swift Current got on the board.

Mathew Ward fired the puck toward the net from the left point and it bounced off the end wall and out to the opposite side of the net. Raphael Pelletier picked it up before sliding it across the crease for Josh Filmon who tapped it into the open net for his 22nd of the year, putting the Broncos ahead 1-0 just 3:50 into the game.

Swift Current had plenty of chances to add to their lead in the first period, including partial breakaways for Sam McGinley and Brady Birnie, but Garin Bjorklund did everything he could to keep his team in the game as the Broncos led 1-0 after one period.

The Tigers couldn’t stay out of the penalty box to start the second period, taking four minor penalties in the opening 9:08 of the period. The Broncos had trouble getting set up in the Medicine Hat zone and were unable to add to their lead.

Birnie had another great chance for a goal late in the period, hitting the goal post on the blocker side of Bjorklund on a two-on-one rush, but the game remained 1-0 heading into the third period with the shots 24-12 Swift Current. It took Medicine Hat over 16 minutes to register their first shot on net of the period.

Swift Current finally solved Bjorklund again early in the third period. Off a turnover by Medicine Hat, Connor Hvidston picked up the puck in the slot and fired a shot on goal as he toe-dragged around a defender. His shot beat Bjorklund over the blocker, giving the Broncos some breathing room with a 2-0 lead 4:01 into the third.

Birnie hit his second post of the game part way through the third period as the game remained 2-0 into the final minutes.

The Broncos took back-to-back penalties in the final five minutes of regulation, giving the Tigers a chance to cut into the lead. Medicine Hat pulled Bjorklund to make it a 6-on-4, but the Broncos collapsed defensively, combined with a few saves from Poulter, to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard, holding on for a 2-0 win.

The Broncos now return home to host the Regina Pats (23-28-3-2) on Tuesday night.
