The largest helium purification plant in Canada is coming to southwest Saskatchewan.

The Government of Saskatchewan made that announcement recently when they said that Battle Creek would be the location for such a facility.

North American Helium will be building the plant. They are expected to be in service by July 2021, with construction beginning in October of this year.

A press release states that Canada has the fifth most helium resources in the world, many of which are in Saskatchewan. Helium prices are on the rise due to a global shortage, which the press release states is responsible for an increase in price at 160 per cent since 2017.

Saskatchewan has a 4.25 per cent royalty rate for helium.

Cypress Hills MLA and Legislative Secretary for Energy and Resources, Doug Steele, said that the facility provides an opportunity for southwest Saskatchewan.

“This project will bring new jobs and economic growth to the southwest region, a part of Saskatchewan that prides itself on resource development and economic growth.”

“The construction of this plant in the Battle Creek area signals the world-class investment climate Saskatchewan offers and we acknowledge North American Helium for their significant work in the region.”
