Every 5 years Stats Canada is tasked to tabulate the population changes in the country, and 2016 was a census year. Many local residents filled out an online survey so the census numbers could be tabulated.

Today the 2016 Canada Census numbers were released.

Swift Current saw an increase of 6.8% from the 2011 census. The current official population stands at 16,604 up from 15,554 in 2011. In 2011 the city grew by 3.7%.

To reach the city's goal of 25 in 25, being 25,000 + Population by 2025, it will take a yearly increase of approximately 5% per year.

The RM of Swift Current saw a slight dip in their Census numbers. They dropped by 2.5% in 2016 while The Town of Shaunavon saw a similar decrease dropping to 2.4% from 2011Cencus levels.

Swift Current currently has a population density of 566 people per square kilometer, with the RM at 1.8 people per Sq. KM and the town of Shaunavon at 335 People per sq. km based on the 2016 Census data.
