Freezing rain this past weekend in Swift Current has led to poor driving conditions in the days since.

City sanding crews took to the streets Saturday evening to reduce the hazardous road conditions.

Since Monday morning, regular sanding measures were taken, where two sanding units start at 6:00 am and work throughout the day.

The City is encouraging motorists to proceed with caution, something Sergeant Kelly Guider with the Swift Current City RCMP agrees with.

"We are reminding people to drive very cautiously. Even if you're in a vehicle that appears to have traction, make sure you're giving yourself lots of space because perhaps the vehicle you're meeting doesn't quite have the same amount of traction," he said.

The City RCMP Sergeant says they've responded to a number of crashes due to the road conditions.

"Luckily there was nothing too serious, injury-wise. Obviously it's painstaking to deal with a vehicle that requires being towed and property damage. There's also been some city property that's been damaged when cars leave the road surface," he said.

Sergeant Guider says the best way to reduce risk is to reduce speed. As well, he shares that these road conditions have surprised some residents with how slippery they really are.

The City says sanding efforts will carry on throughout the week, and thanks residents and motorists for their patience.
