Swift Current Online recently caught up with Deputy Fire Chief Pete L'Heureux from the Swift Current Fire Department regarding January fire safety.

Ensuring you are prepared to travel in the cold weather is essential according to L'Heureux.

"One other safety tip just when it's cold, just an encouragement when your out travelling, even around town. Some boots and mitts in the car, even a blanket and candle. If you get stuck or if your in a ditch or somewhere someone doesnt drive by very often it's a good thing to have those in the car."

L'Heureux says snow removal is also important.

"We rely on the fire hydrants if there is a fire even in the extreme cold like this. And the hydrants around the community if you've got a hydrant on your lot or on your front yard, just shovel out around that hydrant a little bit especially on a commercial lot. Lot's of times a contractor is pushing/moving snow so just a reminder to make sure your not covering or obstructing hydrants."

In addition to clearing snow from fire hydrants, residents should also ensure all doorways are clear of snow in case of the need for an emergency exit.

L'Heureux also reminds residents to check their fire and carbon dioxide detectors in their homes. He says they are relativley inexpensive and easy to install. He encourages everyone to have one in their home as they provide easy peace of mind in case anything goes wrong in the home.
