The latest edition of Coffee with a Cop was a success at Urban Ground in Swift Current.

The Swift Current Municipal RCMP were able to sit down with many having an espresso, Americano, or latte, as they met with the general public in a relaxed setting.

Evan Gordon, staff sergeant with the Municipal RCMP, was happy to get the chance to discuss whatever people had on their minds.

“I think it's definitely something that has been beneficial,” said Gordon. “Lots of positive comments from the folks that we've been able to chat with, and really appreciative of the people that have come out.”

A different setting

Gordon and his officers were happy to meet with the public outside of their regular working conditions.

“So much of our interaction with people on a daily basis is unfortunately in times of crisis,” said Gordon. “So a time like this where we don't have to manage a crisis, an emergency and people aren't in that situation themselves, it definitely creates different relationships and different conversations.”

The chance to sit down and meet with people on common ground at Urban Ground invites discussion on a variety of topics, even those outside the normal cop-talk of fraud and theft.

“We've had people asking questions about those frauds and scams or about speeders by their house,” Gordon admitted. “But we've also had people sharing stories about when the detachment was built, and ‘I used to play slow pitch with the members from 20 years ago’. Lots of good connections, more than anything.”

We should grab a cup again some time

Gordon is hopeful that the chance to continue these sit-down settings with people comes again. He isn’t sure quite yet where the next one will be held, and is open to invitation from establishments in Swift Current.

“This is kind of a one-off right now, but as with when we were partnering up with the Chamber of Commerce and doing those cops and coffee, I definitely see the benefit to continuing this,” said Gordon. “That's something that we'll look at in the future.

As for what Gordon recommends from the menu at Urban Ground?

“I’m a big London Fog guy,” he said.

Gordon thanked Urban Ground for hosting the detachment and all those who came by to chat.
