The Senate  passed Bill C-45 last night, but when Swift Current city council met Monday night they felt the federal government was lagging behind with marijuana regulations for when it is legalized.

As of June 1 the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority announced the 51 cannabis retail store permits. Of the 51, two have been granted to businesses to operate within Swift Current.

Councillor Ron Toles expressed his frustration with the federal government, saying they're jumping the gun with legalization, without getting the kinks worked out quickly enough.

"I think we’re maybe a little bit ahead of the game doing this at a municipal level," said Toles, referring to the City setting location guidelines for cannabis businesses.

Toles, who has spoken openly numerous times that he thinks legalization is coming too quickly, shared that concern at council.

"I’m not really comfortable with the whole way this is coming down from the top to us and being dumped on us to make decisions when I’m not sure that we have the total information to make those decisions."

There is also lots of concern towards the quality and the stability of marijuana as there have not yet been assurances toward the consistency of cannabis.

"In a product like alcohol, the product has quality control," Toles continued. "You could rest assured that when you bought a bottle of alcohol one day the next day it was exactly the same chemical composition."

Canada would be the third country to legalize marijuana nationally, following Spain and Uruguay.
