A new contract has been issued for the East Landfill.

The contract is in regards to the operations of the landfill, which are contracted by the City of Swift Current to an individual or company based on some prior criteria.

This contract will last for the next three years and will be under the care of GFL Environmental Inc. (GFL), for a fixed annual cost of a little over $353,000.

Mitch Minken, general manager of infrastructure and operations for the City of Swift Current, presented the details of the contract to city council.

"GFL has been operating the landfill on an interim basis and has proven to be reliable and instrumental during the transition," said Minken.

GFL took over the operations of the landfill back on May 17, 2022, on an interim basis. During that time, the City has seen they are capable of operating the disposal centre.

Their bid for the contract also included the bonus of an offer to implement an alternative daily cover system that will meet regulatory requirements. This alternative daily covering is projected to save $200,000 annually in landfill airspace.

The final contract includes a breakdown of different costs and services, like an $11.00 per tonne fee for waste cover and compaction, as well as a $1,200 caveat for snow removal events.

The contract is expected to save $612,000 on airspace annually over the previous operational setup.

The entire dump will be working towards closure, as per the direction of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment. Under the City's current permit to operate, the landfill is governed for operation until 2025.
