Following this week's arrest of former Prince Andrew, a past resident of Swift Current is calling for the removal of a plaque at a City park commemorating a visit from the prince 37 years ago.

On July 24, 1989, the Duke and Duchess of York visited the City of Swift Current for the 75th anniversary of the incorporation of the City, and a plaque was put up in Elmwood Park to recognize the event.

Sheldon Johnston said that he was present at the historic ceremony when the plaque was commemorated.

"I have requested that the City remove any public representations of his involvement, specifically due to his arrest in relation to the Jeffrey Epstein file and his [alleged] involvement with underage women," he said.

Now known as a former prince, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on Thursday morning on suspicion of misconduct in public office and released pending investigation.

"With the parameters of this case and the awareness that people are having today towards the particular problem of the trafficking and abuse of women, I just don't think this is right in our present society," said Johnston. "I think we should be respectful of people who have gone through this type of trauma in the past and [reduce] things that could contribute [negatively] to their mental health."

The City provided comment, saying that "the City of Swift Current advises that it is consulting with the Province and other municipalities to determine an appropriate course of action, as many communities in Saskatchewan and across Canada would be in similar situations."

"I am hoping to get some public pressure, because I do not think that the plaque at the park should remain," Johnston added.
