Breaking things typically isn't the greatest, but breaking ground for a new health centre? That's pretty great.

That's exactly what happened in Kincaid earlier this week, as community members and officials came together to dig up the first shovel of soil at what will be the site of their new Kincaid and District Health Centre.

Lois Toye, vice chair for the Kincaid and District Health Centre Board, is glad they chose to go with a new building after it was determined that their old building would need $300,000 in repairs.

"We just felt after a public meeting that it wasn't very feasible to start working on a building that was built in the 50s," said Toye. "In late 2021, we had a public meeting, and it was decided. So we drew up some plans, then we went to an engineer, and we created a design for a newer, smaller, more efficient clinic."

This new facility will benefit not just the citizenry of Kincaid but will also have an effect on the quality of life for folks in Hazenmore, Aneroid, Meyronne, Glenbain, Billimun, Ferland, Mankota and other villages and townships across the area.

"About 19 or 20 communities use the clinic," shared Toye. "The facility is mainly used by people within a 50-mile radius."

The projected cost of the new structure is roughly $800,000, with the project already being funded for $300,000 through local efforts of sponsorships and donations.

"A loan will fund the remainder of the project through the RM of Pinto Creek No. 75," shared Toye. "Fundraising will be ongoing for years to come."

The Health Centre will employ the same folks who were working at the old facility, with no increase in staff. They have a doctor, registered nurse practitioner, lab tech and receptionist. There is also an accompanying staff of maintenance workers.
