Roughly 1000 students flooded the streets around the Swift Current Comprehensive High School as they walked for a cause earlier this week.

It was the first annual Terry Fox Walk for the school since 2019, and the whole student body gathered together.

Their trek started from the school’s gymnasium at 11:30 on Tuesday morning, with the route being roughly 1.7 kilometres.

Mandy Herrick, one of the teachers with the Student Leadership Council, said the day started off with an assembly to welcome everyone back.

“We haven’t closed our online donations yet, but we’ve raised about $500 just doing Toonies for Terry,” Herrick said. “Students bring toonies to the assembly, and then the SLC students collect them on their way in.”

She added that the powerful event is a unique chance to connect the school’s community by spending time together with a similar goal.

“It affects so many of our students,” Herrick said. “They do those stickers that say ‘I’m running for,’ and it’s just amazing how every single student seems to have something to write.”

It isn't often that the school gets to gather together as a whole, and what better way to start of the year than doing just that to pitch in for the same cause.
