Swift Current’s Joel Rumpel has been named the new assistant coach for the ECHL's Norfolk Admirals.

Rumpel played his minor hockey in Swift Current, including three seasons in goal with the Home Hardware Legionnaires before playing four years with the University of Wisconsin Badgers, and was a Hobey Baker Award finalist in the 2013-14 season.

He recently wrapped up a seven-season professional hockey career, winning the ECHL's Kelly Cup twice with the Allen Americans in 2015 and 2016. He also had stints with the AHL's San Jose Barracuda and Iowa Wild and played two seasons in Europe.

"This organization has a very proud history and I'm so excited to be a part of it," Rumpel said in a team press release. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to work alongside [head coach Jeff Carr] and the hockey operations staff. I love the direction this team is heading and I can't wait to get behind the bench."

Rumpel’s first game behind the bench for the Admirals was a 3-2 win over the Adirondack Thunder on Sunday.
