Drivers and residents may notice a flame reaching 40 feet in the R.M. of Riverside over the next while.

SaskEnergy is planning to conduct controlled natural gas flaring every day from August 20 through 30, between 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

The flaring will take place at the TransGas Success Compressor Site, situated roughly six kilometres southwest of the Village.

According to the Crown Corporation, the procedure is necessary for maintenance work to be done on the natural gas line system and supports the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to their customers.

During this process, a portion of the gas line will be isolated from the system and natural gas will be removed from the line in a controlled burn called a flare; an industry standard practice when natural gas needs to be removed from a line that reduces the carbon footprint of the vented natural gas by 85 per cent.

The area around the flares will be supervised to ensure public safety, and SaskEnergy has notified the R.M. of Riverside and the local fire department.

Residential natural gas service in the area will not be affected.
