Environment and Climate Change Canada is casting doubt on claims of rain south of Swift Current.
Posts on social media indicate that the area south of Swift Current received five or more inches of rain in the last few days. However, ECCC meteorologist, Kyle Ziolkowski, says that the storms didn't stay in any one spot long enough to deliver more than 10 to 20 millimetres of rain, or an inch and a bit at most over the last three days.
"Yeah, I'm not so sure I believe that (claim of five inches)," said Ziolkowski. "I mean, just looking at the past radar loops, the storms had decent rain cores on them, but they're also moving at a pretty decent pace."
One area that did get a large amount of rain yesterday was Prince Albert, which received five inches of rain.
"Unfortunately, it didn't really get much further north," said Ziolkowski. "There are areas getting rain up there, but it's spotty at best." It won't be enough to put out those fires at this point."
Swift Current and area can expect maybe a few more bursts of rain for Sunday and into the evening. The forecast for after that point is calling for more sunny weather, without much in the way of moisture.
The smoke should be clearing up around Swift Current as well. While Saturday was bad enough to warrant a special air quality advisory, the westward wind has been working to alleviate those conditions.
