Police around the province last month were cracking down on people who didn't make it click.

SGI reports that law enforcement in Saskatchewan issued 409 tickets during February Traffic Safety Spotlight that shone a light on seat belt and car seat infractions.

Tyler McMurchy, the manager of media relations with SGI, said he's baffled people still aren't buckling up in this day and age.

"The fact that there are any seat belt infractions in Saskatchewan in 2019 is a bit mind-boggling considering seat belts have been the law for 40 years," he said.

Of the 409 offences, 344 tickets were given to the driver of the vehicle failing to wear a seat belt properly.

"People I think are mostly aware of the fact that seat belts are the number one thing you can due to protect yourself in the event of a collision," he said. "They're the best, quickest step you can take to prevent yourself from being hurt or killed in the event of a serious vehicle collision."

Back in 2017, 16 of the 148 people killed in vehicle collisions in Saskatchewan was due to being improperly restrained or not buckled up at all.

Law enforcement also encountered 224 impaired driving offences (including 192 Criminal Code charges), 563 distracted driving offences (512 of those for cellphone use), and 4,028 speeding/aggressive driving offences during the second month of the year.
