Fans at Bronco games might have noticed an increased police presence recently at some games, and that's because police are trying to prevent impaired driving.

Swift Current City RCMP Staff Sergeant Gary Hodges said that on the last two games of the regular season - March 16 and 17 - 100 vehicles were stopped at a check point right outside the parking lot each night. Hodges said the driver of the first vehicle pulled over was impaired, but that was the only person.

"When you look at it in the big scheme of things, I'd say that's probably a positive overall in the community," said Hodges, of there being only one person charged with impaired driving. "It could have easily been the first or 20th or hopefully none, but unfortunately I think that's probably the first time in my career, and we've run hundreds of those checkstops, that the first vehicle that you stop had somebody under the influence unfortunately."

That was during a national impaired driving awareness campaign.

A couple nights ago, Hodges said they had a police presence in the parking lot after the Game 7 win over Regina.

"After the game last night they were in the parking lot for a little while, again just doing a little bit of preventative work. Maybe if someone had one or two extra ones during the game, they would think twice if they saw a police car about driving home if they maybe weren't in the right shape to do that."

Hodges said it wasn't really planned out, as it depended on what other calls of service were coming in two nights ago. He added that it's "very proactive," as they do have a lot of people go up and chat with the police officers.
