Isaac Poulter recorded his fifth shutout of the season by turning aside all 37 shots sent his way as the Swift Current Broncos (25-31-5-2) blanked the Calgary Hitmen (22-31-6-2) 3-0 Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos had to weather an early storm from the Hitmen who came out of the gates with more jump, peppering Poulter with shots in the early going. Poulter was up to the task to get his team through the rocky start with the shots reading 12-4 Calgary at one point in the first period.

Swift Current then opened the scoring in the back half of the period. Sam McGinley fired the puck from the left point to Carter Stebbings in the right circle, and his backhand shot was kicked away by Brayden Peters.

The rebound came off Peters’s right pad and straight into the slot for Cole Nagy who quickly fired in his 12th goal of the season, putting the Broncos up 1-0 with 6:03 to go in the first period.

Poulter came up with a pair of strong saves off a one timer from the slot and then the rebound chance on his glove side in the final seconds of the first period, helping the Broncos get to the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Calgary ran into penalty trouble in the second period and the Broncos capitalized on their first chance. From his own goal line, Owen Pickering fired a perfect stretch pass to the tape of Stebbings who came in on a breakaway and lifted a backhander over the blocker of Peters to put the Broncos up 2-0.

Stebbings was also slashed on the play as the Broncos went right back to the man advantage following the goal, but couldn’t add to their lead. All told, the Broncos ended the second period with four power plays and outshot the Hitmen 14-11 in the middle frame.

After killing off a penalty of their own early in the third period, the Broncos went back on the attack and added to their lead. Karson King took a pass in the left circle and faked the shot before heading behind the goal.

King then wrapped the puck around on his backhand and banked it off Peters and in, scoring his eighth of the year to push the Broncos lead to 3-0 just 4:25 into the third period.

It was the Broncos turn to run into some penalty trouble in the third period, eventually taking three minors, but they killed them all off and would finish the afternoon a perfect six-for-six on the penalty kill.

The Hitmen pressured late, trying to break the shutout bid for Poulter, but he stood his ground from start to finish, picking up fifth shutout of the season in the 3-0 win.

Swift Current now has just five games remaining in the 2021-22 regular season, with their next game action coming Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
