On Saturday, many communities in the southwest were without power thanks to a power outage.

The power originally went off around 5:45 a.m. Saturday morning and flickered on and off throughout day in some communities while being restored in others.

Jordan Jackle, a spokesperson for Sask Power, explained what caused the power outages.

"In the one case, the first transmission line case this morning it was a situation where there was an equipment failure on two transmission structures, and in one case it started smouldering away a little bit at the transmission structure," he said. "In the other case, it was a situation of voltage instability. When a transmission system kind of recognizes that the voltage is maybe not doing what it should be, it will trip to prevent farther issues down the line."

Jackle said communities affected included Leader, Cabri, Climax, Shaunavon, parts of Swift Current, and many more.

"If you kind of visualize it, it would be a line from Leader to about Swift Current extending straight south to U.S. border," he said. "It's a pretty wide area of southwest Saskatchewan that has been experiencing power outages throughout the morning. Power would come on for a bit, as we restored it, in a lot of cases it has tripped off it again."

According to Sask Power's Twitter all power had been restored to all communities affected by the outage.
