ORIGINAL STORY: 12 p.m.

The Swift Current Pride crosswalk on Central Avenue may be getting refreshed, as the Pride community hopes to raise funds to restore their symbol.

It is the first permanent rainbow crosswalk in Saskatchewan and puts Swift Current on the map for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. An estimated $5,000 needs to be raised to purchase the coloured aggregate, often used in snow-plow-resistant applications.

Anika Henderson, an ally, spearheads this project.

“The mission is to show the 2SLGBTQIA+ community members that they are loved, accepted, and supported,” stated Henderson. “The rainbow crosswalk is a physical symbol of community care and resilience. The fact that it needs to be maintained is a reflection of the work it takes to maintain a healthy and safe community. It requires that people come together to show they care.”

The cost estimate is based on the original installation of MMX material; however, it may cost more. If the fundraising campaign raises extra money, the remaining funds will go towards the local Pride Centre’s operational costs or program funding. The timeline is expected to end with the repair coming sometime in mid-spring.

Shaun Hanna, a board member of Southwest Saskatchewan Pride is getting help from multiple other organizations.

"When we do organize a repair day, I think it would be a great opportunity for people to come out and make it a big thing," stated Hanna. "We've already been reached by a couple of other organizations that want to offer some resources."
